Tabasco’s ecosystem diversity can be grouped into high and medium rainforests, wetlands, mangroves and coastal dunes, all of which are of great environmental value. However, this wealth has been impacted and diminished by the agricultural, oil and urban boom.

In particular, the Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFF) Cañón del Usumacinta is home to the most important remnants of high evergreen forest remaining in Tabasco and is the furthest point to which the Petén and Selva Lacandona rainforest massif extends. The most important river in Mexico and Guatemala, the Usumacinta, crosses through this area and has played a strategic role in the cultural and environmental history of our country.

Since 2010 ENDESU, in close collaboration with the management of this natural area and the support of the owners of Hacienda Santa Margarita, has restored this 40-hectare property. Currently, Santa Margarita is an example of success in the generation of biological corridors in favor of the recovery of biodiversity and ecosystem services of the rainforest.

As of 2015, within this property, we operate the Training Center for the Sustainable Development of the Usumacinta River Yaax Tuni Ja (green water stone), which has a site museum and infrastructure for training workshops, a demonstration area for agroecological management of plant nurseries and orchards, as well as the operation of eco-techniques and a camping area.
